Cacao the superfood

'Chocolate was never supposed to be unhealthy!'

It started with a craving for chocolate! Our founder had a fascination with understanding cravings and what they really mean. Most people will say that cravings for sweet foods like chocolate will just mean that you have low energy but we have learnt that it can mean much more than that! Our belief is that we need to start listening to our bodies and understand what our cravings are trying to tell us instead of just ignoring them and overeating later.

What does craving chocolate mean?

We decided to look into one of the most popular cravings of all, CHOCOLATE! If chocolate really is 'unhealthy' then why would our bodies tell us to eat it? Well it turns out that craving chocolate is usually a sign that your body needs more magnesium. It is currently predicted that up to 82.5% of people are not having enough magnesium in their diets. This is due to over processed foods and the reusing of soils when growing fruit and vegetables. Cacao, the main ingredient in chocolate is naturally high in magnesium which explains why our bodies tell us to eat it.

What are the signs of low magnesium?

  • Sleepiness

  • Irritability

Symptoms of low magnesium

Is it ok to eat chocolate everyday?

Yes and no, chocolate can be great for your health providing you eat the right chocolate. Cacao is the reason for chocolates famous taste and is a hugely important superfood. As well as being high in magnesium it is also high in antioxidants and many minerals such as potassium, copper and calcium. All of these help to relax muscles, improve fatigue, lower blood pressure, better heart/brain health and even improve skin collagen production. Most mainstream chocolate however has added additives, flavorings, preservatives, refined sweeteners and refined sugars which all add to future health issues. All of these are ingredients which we avoid.

Is coconut sugar healthy?

Another sugar which is being promoted as a healthy alternative is coconut sugar. This is due to claims that it is has a much higher amount of minerals than white sugar and is less refined. This is a problematic exaggeration, although it does have slightly higher minerals and is less processed than white sugar, overall it is almost the same calorie wise and mineral wise. You would have to eat a ridiculously unhealthy amount to gain any nutritional value.

Is coconut sugar healthy

Is all sugar bad?

Absolutely NOT! Natural sugars are essential as part of a healthy balanced diet. They are great brain food and help fuel the body. The important word here is natural. Three foods which contain natural healthy sugars are honey, maple sap and fruit. This is why these are our chosen alternatives for sweetening our chocolate as they are nutrient dense and have huge lists of health benefits.

But it doesn't stop there! When developing our flavours we had a strict rule of only using nutrient dense ingredients, doing this we accidently created chocolate which was made up entirely of superfoods. This means our chocolate is considered part of balanced healthy diet and in some cases we even have bars that help towards your 5 a day!
